Sen. Robert Menendez says that the Cuban government is trying to taint his good name
During an interview aired on Tuesday by CNN’s “Newsroom with Brooke Baldwin,” Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), who’s the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told Dana Bash that the Cuban government is trying to taint his name in the hopes of replacing him with a chairman who’ll be friendlier to the Cuban cause.
“Well, let’s put it this way. For 22 years, between the House and the Senate, I have had a firm position and opposition to the Cuban regime that violates the human rights, the democracy of the people of Cuba. I have been outspoken in that regard and I wouldn’t be surprised that the regime would do anything that they can to stop me from being in a position that ultimately would impend their hopes of being able to get a different relationship with the United States,” said Menendez.
Before Menendez became the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the Daily Caller posted a story that alleged Menendez paid to have sex with underage prostitutes in the Dominican Republic.
The Daily Caller reported that the alleged act took place at the home of one of Sen. Menendez’s donors, Dr. Salomon Melgen.
On Monday, the Washington Post reported that its sources say that the CIA has reason to believe that the Cuban government was involved in a “smear” campaign against the senator.
The source told the Washington Post that the Cuban agents’ IP addresses link back to the alleged prostitution claims against Menendez.
Although Menendez appears to be out of the clear with the prostitution case, there is an ongoing federal investigation into Menendez’s involvement in an alleged “kickback scheme” with Dr. Melgen.
“Well, let’s put it this way.
